Virgin Adds Gladstone Flights

Virgin Australia announced that it will utilise its brand new ATR aircraft on new regional services between Brisbane, Gladstone and Port Macquarie.

To commence October 2011, Virgin Australia under its regional alliance with Skywest, said it will also increase the number of services between Canberra and Sydney up to 60 per week.

The carrier’s group executive of alliances Merren McArthur said the new routes to Gladstone and Port Macquarie were part of the airlines commitment to its regional network.

“Gladstone is a booming city with a thriving economy that supports the resources, tourism and primary production sectors,” Ms McArthur explained.

“We have introduced a schedule to suit both the corporate and leisure traveller in this very important market.”

The new routes are still awaiting regulatory approval, but the airline is confident that this will be forthcoming very soon.

Carbon Tax Threat to Gladstone

LONG-TERM Gladstone resident Narelle Russell has grave fears that planned projects in the region will go offshore as a result of the carbon tax announced yesterday by Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

“I do fear for the projects that have been mooted for this area, as they are all carbon intensive,” Mrs Russell said.

The carbon tax of $23 per tonne will be paid by about 500 big polluters.

Manufacturing industries like aluminium smelting will receive 94.5% assistance and liquefied natural gas projects will receive 50% assistance.

Mrs Russell has lived in Gladstone her whole life and said while she had an emotional attachment to the port city, big companies only had an economic attachment.

She said by introducing the carbon tax, the government was putting big companies at a trading disadvantage and they would look at leaving Australia in order to continue making a profit.

“It’s a business decision (if businesses left), not an environmental decision.”

None of Australia’s trading partners had carbon tax schemes and Mrs Russell believes it will do “severe damage” to the economy.

“The businesses can’t be controlled by the government and they will pack up and go some where else,” she said.

“They run on profit, they will not stay here if they aren’t making a profit.

“My fear here for Gladstone is that the government will make it too difficult for them to run and be profitable and then there goes our jobs and our standard of living.

“I would have preferred to have seen some form of licence for big companies and they had to reduce their emissions over a five-year period or they wouldn’t have their licence renewed.”

Under the various compensation and tax cuts being touted by the government in their announcement, Mrs Russell figured she and husband Alf would be better off by about $16 a year.

Prime Minister discusses wish list with Council

Gladstone Regional Council played host to a quick but fruitful visit from Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard recently.

The Prime Minister, who was in Gladstone for the official launch of construction for Gladstone LNG's Curtis Island plant, accepted an invitation to meet with Mayor Gail Sellers, Deputy Mayor Matt Burnett and Council management staff.

Cr Sellers said talks with the Prime Minister had centred on Council's request for Federal assistance to meet with the demands of industrial growth in the region.

"Every Mayor who meets with the Prime Minister is going to push their region's needs and try to advance to the front of the queue," Cr Sellers said.

"However, Gladstone Regional Council believes it has a genuine case for special consideration for Federal Government funding and infrastructure support and the Prime Minister was very receptive and understanding of Council's views."

Cr Sellers said the critical transport infrastructure issue of the Bruce Highway in Central and Northern Queensland, including the vital upgrade proposed for the Calliope Crossroads, were prominent in the discussions with Prime Minister Gillard.

Also discussed was Council's request for special access to the Building Better Regional Cities and Regional Development Australia

Fund programs in order to meet the demands on infrastructure caused by increasing industrial activity in the Gladstone region.
