Gladstone Region and Reef Have the Best Fish Around

Matt Branthwaite holds up a solid north west red emperor.

THIS is the last of my columns for the year and I just wanted to reflect on some of the awesome fish which have been caught around the region during that time.

We are so blessed to have a spectacular river and estuary system on our door step which consistently yields arguably the biggest barra in Australia.

In addition, I think we have the best muddies, prawns, grunter, massive king or threadfin salmon, schools of blue salmon, monster black jew, pull-your-arms-off fingermark, the sweetest tasting whiting, and bream so big that you can knock a fillet off them and come home with 2kg of fillets.

On top of that, we go through to cobia off the beach, flathead which consistently go over length and have to be released, and so much more.

That's just the inshore stuff!

Offshore the fishing we have here is something that the Mexicans (south of the border) and our south-east Queensland counterparts drool over.

Having been part of the Boyne Tannum Hook-up since its inception, I have seen some of the biggest mackerel caught up at Rundle Island weighed in, coral trout which would cost an absolute fortune.

But what about the solid red emperor, or the sweetlip, or as "Time Chrutchill" (Tim Churchill) refers to them, RTE (red throat emperor)?

The Gladstone region, and the Southern Barrier Reef is a very cool place to work, rest, invest, and play; and all of us, who live here, know that.

The places we can visit in a boat are spectacular and at times you have to pinch yourself to ensure you aren't dreaming.

Place like Yellowpatch, Pancake Creek, Seven Mile, or up Grahams Creek on a still foggy morning when the water is like glass and every now and then a "boof" can be heard from a barra having his, or her, brekkie.

What about waking up beside North West, Masthead, or any of the islands, and reefs, just offshore, and looking over the side into crystal clear water, watching the fish swim along the bottom 10m below.
So cool.

It's just a pity the region isn't like that this weekend because this wind looks like continuing through the whole weekend and only possibly dropping out a bit on Monday night.

There are plenty of unstable weather patterns around this time of the year, so if you are intending on slipping out the front over the Christmas break please ensure that you log onto VMR Gladstone, or Roundhill, if you are coming out of Town of 1770.

Know what the weather is doing as well as the tides, especially what they are doing when you approach them in current against wind.

Know your limits, and know the conditions, because it is Christmas and we don't want to lose anyone.
Finally I'd like to wish you all a very merry, and safe Christmas, and hope that the fat fella brings what you want.

If you are short of an idea, why not buy Johnny Mitchell's new DVD called Wild Adventures Curtis Island, now available off his website, Pats Tackle World or Barra Jacks in Rocky if you are from up that way.

Eight years in the making and some of the footage will leave you gobsmacked!

Metro Hotels Provides Spiritual Book to Guests as a Source of Inspiration

In a world-first, Australian-owned hotel chain Metro Hotels will place a book called Jing Si Aphorisms in all rooms in its NSW and Queensland properties, to enable guests to learn more about the Buddhist compassionate relief organisation, Tzu Chi Foundation.

The Foundation first came to the attention of the hotel chain when it went unasked to the aid of Ipswich residents, giving out care packages following the devastating 2011 floods.

The hotel chain’s Ipswich property, Metro Hotel Ipswich International, built a relationship with the Foundation and offered to put books in its rooms so that its guests would learn more about the work and philosophy of the organisation.

Metro Hotels decided to extend this offer to other properties, with Metro Hotel Sydney Central General Manager Earl Muir yesterday accepting a special presentation of the books from Julia Wu, principal of Tzu Chi Foundation, Gold Coast, and Stephen Kan, CEO of Tzu-Chi Sydney.

The book, Jing Si Aphorisms, translates the essence of the Buddha’s teachings to exemplify life lessons. ‘Aphorism’ means original thought, or definition, and rather than being a religious text the book is meant to be an explanation of the Buddhist faith.

Mr Muir said the Tzu Chi Foundation, which lives by the creed that it is more of a blessing to serve others than be served, believes in service to the community and has demonstrated its commitment to this belief through its actions in Ipswich.

“This organisation has shown tremendous compassion and service to Australian communities when they are in need and Metro Hotel believes it is an organisation which Australians may want to know more about,” he said.

“Placing Jing Si Aphorisms in our hotel rooms gives guests another reading option to the Holy Bible. The book is being supplied as a source of inspiration to our guests. This is not about converting people from one religion to another but rather promoting harmony and diversity.”

Demand from Corporate Travellers Drives Metro’s Expansion in Gladstone

G60 Apartments Gladstone
Metro Hotels has expanded and diversified its holdings in Gladstone, Queensland this year to meet the growing demand from corporate travellers for more choice and flexibility in apartment accommodation in Gladstone.

Gladstone is Queensland’s largest multi-commodity port, the fifth largest multi-commodity port in Australia and the world’s fourth largest coal exporting terminal.  It is also home to an aluminium refinery and smelter, cement manufacturing, mines, explosives and chemical plant, three LNG plants, shale oil refinery and an oil recycling plant, all of which have fuelled demand for more flexible and affordable apartment accommodation in the city.

In the brand new 97-unit G60 development, Metro Hotels is managing 18 two-bedroom apartments and one three-bedroom apartment.  Its existing Gladstone property, Metro Hotels & Apartments has 51 one-bedroom apartments.

According to Property Manager, David Robinson, approximately 90 percent of the property’s occupancy is corporate-based, flying in and out from Gladstone Airport, with the majority of large business and government workers staying for two to three days.

“We are broadening and diversifying our holdings in Gladstone to give more choice and more flexibility to our clients, at a more affordable price,” Mr Robinson said.

“It is difficult to find apartment accommodation in Gladstone for short stays.  Our new offering suits the corporate sector as it offers a more affordable option for clients who can now share a two-bedroom apartment for both short and long term stays.

“Some of our regular corporate clients visit Gladstone for up to three or four months.  It will be more cost-effective for them to share a two bedroom apartment with another corporate than to book into a one-bedroom apartment for that period.

Mr Robinson said his corporate clients comment on the convenience of self catering and the spacious rooms, as the reason they choose an apartment over other accommodation choices.  Each apartment is equipped with a full-sized kitchen, washing machine, dryer, separate bedroom and full size balcony.

From late November through to January each year there is an increase in occupancy as the relocation of staff associated with government and large industry occurs.

Metro Hotel & Apartments Gladstone and nearby Apartments G60 are located in the heart of the Gladstone CBD, close to retail shops, restaurants and the entertainment precinct.  Guests have access to all the facilities of Metro Hotel & Apartments Gladstone, including swimming pool and restaurant.

Bolshoi Ballet's Rare Performances Come to Queensland

THE Bolshoi Ballet needs little introduction. One of Russia's premiere professional ballet companies based in the country's oldest and most famous theatre, Bolshoi is known for its size and might.
Home to more than 200 dancers, the company is performing a season exclusive to QPAC.
The company returns to Australia for the first time in nearly two decades and will be performing two rare ballets for Queensland audiences.
Firstly, Le Corsaire is a shining example of the Imperial Russian style of the 19th century combining classical dancing with lavish sets and costumes.
Based on Yuri Burlaka and Alexei Ratmanksy's 2007 adaptation, Le Corsaire is one of the most expensive productions ever mounted by the company and has never been performed in Australia.
The Bright Stream is a 20th-century masterpiece which has been revived after it was banned by Soviet Union authorities because of its setting on a collective farm.
Renowned for its score composed by Dmitri Shostakovich, The Bright Stream features ethnic dances including the famously physical Cossack style.
Both shows will be performed with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Pavel Sorokin.
But if you can't make it to Brisbane then don't fear.
There will be a regional simulcast of the Bolshoi's June 4 performance of Le Corsaire at theatres in Ayr, Bundaberg, Cairns, Gladstone, Mackay, Hervey Bay, Rockhampton and Toowoomba.
Le Corsaire plays QPAC's Lyric Theatre from May 30 to June 5 and The Bright Stream plays the Lyric Theatre from June 7 to 9.
For more information on any of these performances, or to buy tickets, go to www.qpac.com.au

Boyne Island and Tannum Sands

Boyne Island and Tannum Sands have grown in popularity because of their beautiful beaches and relaxed lifestyle.

The lake has been stocked with several fish species since 1996, and over 2 million barramundi have been released.

In addition to the fishing, Lake Awoonga has many natural attractions, especially the wildlife, with more than 225 species of birds (or over 27% of Australia's bird species) found in the region.

Lake Awoonga is also the primary source of Gladstone's water supply. Awoonga dam is not part of the Gladstone township but is part of the Gladstone region and formerly part of the Calliope Shire.
